  3.     In our Planet of the Year issue we asked our readers what
  4. they might be willing to do to help slow environmental decline.
  5. So far, 10,234 people have replied. The proposal to pay 50 per
  6. gal. more in gasoline taxes in order to spur fuel conservation
  7. was greeted with approval by 7,867, while 2,228 said no. Some
  8. claimed such a hike "would be regressive." The idea of dividing
  9. garbage into separate categories in order to facilitate
  10. recycling drew an even higher number of supporters: 9,715. Five
  11. percent of them already presort their trash. Only 479 nixed the
  12. idea. We heard from 266 ecophobes, 2.6% of the total, who
  13. answered no to both proposals.
