- LETTERS, Page 8Positively Inclined
-
- In our Planet of the Year issue we asked our readers what
- they might be willing to do to help slow environmental decline.
- So far, 10,234 people have replied. The proposal to pay 50 per
- gal. more in gasoline taxes in order to spur fuel conservation
- was greeted with approval by 7,867, while 2,228 said no. Some
- claimed such a hike "would be regressive." The idea of dividing
- garbage into separate categories in order to facilitate
- recycling drew an even higher number of supporters: 9,715. Five
- percent of them already presort their trash. Only 479 nixed the
- idea. We heard from 266 ecophobes, 2.6% of the total, who
- answered no to both proposals.
